Former presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Peter Obi, has condemned the ongoing killings in Benue, Kogi, and Taraba States, describing the bloodshed as a heartbreaking tragedy and a sign of failed leadership.

In a statement shared via his official X (formerly Twitter) account on Wednesday, Obi said the violence ravaging parts of the Middle Belt region is no longer just a security crisis but a reflection of the government’s failure to protect lives.

“The news of the continued senseless killings that have gripped parts of Taraba, Benue, and Kogi States in recent times is heartbreaking,” he wrote.

According to him, the violence has claimed countless lives in recent months, with entire families wiped out, including children, women, and religious leaders.

“This is not merely violence. It is a failure of leadership and a gaping wound in the soul of our nation,” Obi said.

He warned that the country risks normalizing mass killings and lawlessness if urgent action is not taken.

“These are not mere statistics, they are our fellow Nigerians. Each life lost is a tragedy that must not be ignored,” he stated.

Obi reiterated that the primary responsibility of the government is the protection of life and property. He questioned the kind of future the country is building if such killings continue unchecked.

“I mourn with the good people of Taraba, Benue, and Kogi. I share their grief and pain. But I also raise my voice because silence in the face of such horror is complicity,” he said.

Calling on national leaders to act decisively, Obi added, “Nigeria cannot continue like this. This is not the Nigeria we deserve. We must end this bloodshed. We must reclaim our humanity. A new Nigeria is POssible.”
