Peter Obi, the 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate, has urged the government to take immediate action to protect the lives of Nigerians, emphasizing that the ongoing killing spree in the country must be stopped.

In a statement on his verified X account on Sunday, the former governor of Anambra State expressed his sorrow over the recent killing of seven mobile police officers by armed bandits in the Zurmi Local Government Area of Zamfara State.

Obi stressed the need for the government to ensure national safety by apprehending and prosecuting the criminals responsible for these heinous acts.

“I will continue to raise my voice against the escalating insecurity in Nigeria. The life of every Nigerian is precious and must be protected,” Obi stated.

He added, “For the best interest of our nation, I must continue to speak out against the rising tide of insecurity in Nigeria. It has claimed countless lives, caused widespread property damage, and hindered our progress and development.

“Moreover, pervasive insecurity has robbed our people of the freedom to enjoy peace and happiness in a democratic society. Democracy without freedom from fear is meaningless.

“I was deeply saddened to learn about the recent killing of seven mobile police officers by armed bandits in the Zurmi Local Government Area of Zamfara State. The bandits also killed five other residents in the attack.

“Last Tuesday, no fewer than 30 Nigerians were killed in separate attacks in the Dutsinma and Safana Local Government Areas of Katsina State by terrorists. Additionally, two days ago, terrorists reportedly invaded the Bassa community in the Shiroro Local Government Area of Niger State, killing 20 people.

“Families are constantly left in agony over the loss of their loved ones due to terrorist attacks. Sadly, the menace of insecurity continues to plague every part of the nation, leaving behind a trail of tears, blood, and death.

“We cannot allow this killing spree to persist in our nation. The government must act to protect the invaluable lives of Nigerians and ensure national safety by identifying and prosecuting the perpetrators of these crimes.

“The life of every Nigerian matters and must be safeguarded. I extend my condolences to the families of the fallen police officers, the Nigeria Police Force, and other victims of insecurity across our nation. We shall overcome. May God grant eternal rest to the deceased.”
