Fake doctor arrested in Plateau

The Plateau State chapter of the Nigerian Medical Association made a significant move on Sunday, apprehending a fraudulent individual posing as a doctor. This individual was allegedly responsible for administering medical procedures, which tragically resulted in the death of a patient in Angwa Rogo community, located in Jos North Local Government Area of the state.

Following the distressing incident and the ensuing public outcry, both the Nigerian Medical Association and law enforcement agencies swiftly intervened. They conducted a joint operation, culminating in the arrest of the fake doctor and the subsequent closure of the medical facility where the illicit activities took place.

Dr. Bapigaan Audu, the State Chairman of the Nigerian Medical Association, along with the association’s Public Relations Officer, Dr. Istifanus Bako, officially confirmed these actions. They emphasized their commitment to maintaining the integrity of healthcare services in Plateau State.

The joint statement issued by Dr. Audu and Dr. Bako highlighted the association’s collaborative effort with the State Security Services and the Inspectorate Unit of the State Ministry of Health. Together, they sealed off the Al Ihsan Nursing Home in Anguwan Rogo, Jos North LGA. This measure was taken due to allegations of quackery, operating beyond authorized boundaries, and instances of patient mismanagement, including a recent fatality.

Law enforcement, led by dedicated operatives, carried out the operation promptly, resulting in the closure of the facility and the arrest of the perpetrator. Investigations into the matter are currently underway.

In urging citizens to prioritize legitimate healthcare facilities, the statement underscores the importance of ensuring that private healthcare establishments employ only licensed medical professionals. The association reaffirms its dedication to safeguarding the reputation of the medical profession and pledges to support the government in providing quality healthcare services for the welfare of all citizens.

This incident follows a similar occurrence in March 2024 when the NMA apprehended another fake doctor for allegedly conducting medical procedures in schools and places of worship across the state.
