BREAKING: FG arraigns Sowore over alleged false posts against Tinubu
The Federal Government has brought activist and publisher, Omoleye Sowore, before the Federal High Court in Abuja on a five-count charge over alleged false social media posts against President Bola Tinubu.
Also named in the suit are X (formerly Twitter) and Meta, owners of Facebook and Instagram, as co-defendants.
Court filings allege that Sowore, via his verified X account, wrote on August 25: “This criminal @officialABAT actually went to Brazil to state that there is no more corruption under his regime in Nigeria. What audacity to lie shamelessly!”
Prosecutors argue the post violates Section 24(2)(b) of the Cybercrimes Prohibition and Prevention Act, 2024, which criminalizes the transmission of false statements capable of triggering public disorder.
The government maintained the remarks were deliberately aimed at inciting disaffection and unrest against the President.
Sowore appeared in court on Tuesday as proceedings commenced.
