Five personnel killed as suspected IPOB gunmen ambush soldiers in Abia

The Nigerian military has mourned the loss of five personnel from Operation Udoka, who were killed in action by suspected gunmen from the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).

The incident occurred at the Obikabia Junction Checkpoint in the Obingwa Local Government Area, near Aba metropolis in Abia State.

Major General Edward Buba, the Director of Defence Media Operations, confirmed the attack on Friday and noted that an investigation is ongoing. He emphasized that each soldier lost is a significant and terrible loss.

The military also reported that six civilians were killed in the crossfire.

“The troops deployed to enforce peace and protect citizens in the area were ambushed and attacked by the terrorists,” said Major General Buba.

“The terrorists, using three tinted Prado Toyota SUVs and supported by others from surrounding built-up areas, launched a surprise attack on the checkpoint.

“It must be reiterated that the support of the people is crucial in combating terrorism. The terrorists rely on this support, and in this case, IPOB exploited it to carry out their attack.

“The situation is deeply concerning. It is imperative that the military responds decisively to this heinous act against our troops.

“Our response will be fierce. We will apply overwhelming military pressure on the group to ensure their total defeat,” the statement concluded.
