Gasperini hails Lookman’s growth after stunning display against Juventus
Atalanta manager Gian Piero Gasperini has heaped praise on Nigerian forward Ademola Lookman following his outstanding performance in the club’s dominant 4-0 victory over Juventus on Sunday.
Lookman scored in the emphatic win before being substituted in the 80th minute, receiving a warm embrace from Gasperini on the sidelines.
The praise marks a turnaround in their relationship after a tense moment in February when Lookman missed a crucial penalty in a Champions League clash against Club Brugge. However, Gasperini now acknowledges the forward’s growth, particularly in his tactical discipline and teamwork.
“When a group spends 300 days together in a year, differences can arise,” Gasperini said in his post-match press conference via Football Italia.
The Italian tactician credited Lookman’s transformation into a more team-oriented player as a key factor in his recent success and Atalanta’s strong performances.
“Lookman became a fantastic player when he improved his perception of the team. Before, he played with a more individual approach,” Gasperini explained.
Impressed by the Nigerian’s progress, the Atalanta boss believes Lookman has the leadership qualities to captain the team before the season concludes.
“Lookman made Atalanta great, and Atalanta made him great. I am convinced he can be the captain before the end of the season,” he added.
Currently in top form, the reigning African Player of the Year has scored 13 goals and provided five assists in 22 Serie A appearances this season.
