Gov Alia under fire over silence on killings in Idoma community

Benue State Governor, Rev. Fr. Hyacinth Alia, is facing growing criticism from residents and civil society groups over his continued silence on two tragic incidents that have rocked the state in recent days — the killing of over 25 persons in Edikwu Ankpali, Apa Local Government Area, and the abduction of several passengers in Owukpa, Ogbadibo LGA.
Idoma Voice reports that the victims were traveling from Orba in neighbouring Enugu State to Owukpa when they were intercepted by gunmen at Eyiupi, along the Owukpa-Orokam road.
The attackers reportedly whisked the passengers, mostly women, into the forest.
One woman who narrowly escaped the kidnappers’ den recounted her harrowing experience.
Efforts by journalists to get a response from both the police and the state government have so far been unsuccessful.
Similarly, the state government has yet to comment on the deadly attack in Edikwu Ankpali, Apa LGA, where over 25 residents were reportedly killed by suspected herdsmen.
The silence from both the government and security agencies has drawn sharp criticism from residents and civil society actors, who accused the authorities of indifference to the growing insecurity in the state.
“It’s disheartening that more than 25 people can be slaughtered in one night and the government hasn’t said a word,” said Ngbde Samuel, a resident of Apa.
“The lack of communication and accountability from those in charge is unacceptable,” said another resident, who gave her name as Mrs Ejeh.
