Group calls for sack of PPRO, Jimoh Moshood for insulting Ortom

A Makurdi-based civil society group, #IstandWithOrtom, has demanded that the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Force Headquarters, Jimoh Moshood should apologise to Benue State Governor, Samuel Ortom for describing the governor as a “drowning man.”

Moshood had during a live programmed monitored on Channels TV, described Gov. Ortom as a ‘drowning man’ for his firm stand against open grazing in the state.

Reacting to Jimoh’s comment, the group noted that the context in which the Police spokesman described the governor as a drowning man was an indication that the governor was not a man to be taken seriously.

The group’s demand is coming on the heels of call by the Benue State Government that it has lost confidence in the ability of the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Ibrahim Idris to carryout his functions without bias.
In a statement signed by the Convener of the group, Iorliam Shija and made available to DAILY POST in Makurdi on Tuesday, the group said the remarks of the Force PPRO was “unprofessional and unfortunate.”

He said, “The #IstandWithOrtom group has found the comments of the Police Public Relations Officer, Jimoh Moshood on Channels TV Morning Programme, Sun Rise Daily of Tuesday (yesterday), not only unprofessional but unfortunate.
“The police officer amongst other unprintable names, regarded to the Executive Governor of Benue State, Samuel Ortom as a “drowning man.

“We wish to condemn the police for such an ugly public show. As PPRO, Moshood is the face of the Nigerian police. So such public careless utterances, can further embolden the attackers of Benue to carryout more attacks against the state.”‎
Shija stated that Governor Ortom had enacted a law that had the backing of the people, adding that “the comments of the PPRO was an indication that he has taken sides with the invaders of Benue ‎state, ‘Myetti Allah.
“With this kind of audacious behavior by a top cop, it is clear to us now that the police which is expected to be an unbiased agency at all times, has taken side with those who have invaded Benuevillages and are killing our men in their numbers.”‎
According to him, “Our governor has enacted a very popular law, the Anti- Open Grazing Law and the people ofBenue State stand with him as he courageously ensures that the law is implemented.

“The PPRO must know that on this law, irrespective of individual differences and interests, all Benue people are in support of our governor.
“So we find it rather strange that Moshood could offer such comments at a time like this. We therefore call on him to retract those unfortunate words and write a letter of apology to the governor and the good people of Benue State.”
