Guardiola vs Sterling: The bust-up that shook Manchester City

Pep Guardiola, the Manchester City manager, had a confrontation with Raheem Sterling during the 2020-2021 Premier League season, as revealed by Marti Perarnau, a close associate of Guardiola, in his book The Pep Revolution.

The incident reportedly took place in March 2021 in Guardiola’s office, where an argument ensued, leading Sterling to walk out. Following this, Guardiola excluded Sterling from the squad for the match against Fulham.

The tension between them started after Sterling was benched in City’s 5-2 victory over Southampton, which left the England international frustrated. Perarnau also noted that Sterling was further agitated by Guardiola’s frequent praise of Kevin De Bruyne and Bernardo Silva, who were performing exceptionally well at the time.

Sterling and Guardiola will meet again on Sunday, August 18, at Stamford Bridge, as both seek their first points of the season.
