Veteran Nollywood actor and former Labour Party spokesperson, Kenneth Okonkwo, has accused the party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, of betraying him during the height of internal conflicts within the party.

Okonkwo made the claim during a recent interview with Symfoni, which has since gone viral.

The actor-turned-politician officially resigned from the Labour Party in February 2025, citing concerns over the party’s direction and leadership under embattled National Chairman, Julius Abure.

According to Okonkwo, Obi ignored his advice and aligned once again with the Abure-led faction, despite earlier distancing himself from it.

He alleged that Obi was misled by members of the Labour Party leadership, who falsely claimed that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) had recognized Abure’s faction.

“Any politician who knows what he’s doing cannot be betrayed,” Okonkwo said. “But if anyone was betrayed, I can emphatically say Peter Obi betrayed me.”

He continued: “The Julius Abure-led group lied to Obi that INEC had recognized them. Obi then quietly returned to them. I told him, ‘Sir, you’ve made public statements about integrity. Even if INEC has accepted them, that shouldn’t be the reason to go back. These people have shown they’re not democratic. If you return to them, they will ruin your political career and everything you’ve said about integrity will be lost.’”
