Idoma lawyers gift first-class law graduate Ochanya N5m, foreign scholarship
The Association of Idoma Lawyers (AIL), an umbrella body of Idoma natives in the Nigerian Bar, has announced a ₦5 million cash gift and a fully funded foreign scholarship for Sandra Ochanya Owoicho, an outstanding law graduate who recently bagged a First-Class Honours from the Nigerian Law School, Kano Campus.
IDOMA VOICE reports that the association made the pledge during the weekend at a grand reception held in Otukpo in honour of four of their illustrious members who were recently elevated to the prestigious rank of Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN).
The event celebrated Barr. Audu Augustine E., Barr. David Ogenyi Ogebe, Barr. Eddie Inegede and Barr. Godwin Sunday Ogboji, for their elevation and distinguished service to the legal profession and humanity.
However, the high point of the night was the unveiling of the Education Endowment Fund for Ochanya, who stole the spotlight with her academic brilliance and inspiring story of determination.
Ochanya, a proud daughter of Benue and graduate of the Rev. Fr. Moses Orshio Adasu University, Makurdi (formerly Benue State University), obtained her LL.B with a Second Class (Lower) Division, yet defied all odds to emerge among the few students who secured First-Class Honours at the Law School — a rare feat in Nigeria’s legal education.
In recognition of her achievement, AIL members contributed over ₦5 million and awarded her a fully paid foreign scholarship for her master’s degree at a top international university.
Speaking at the event, Chief Godwin Obla, SAN, commended Ochanya’s resilience and drive, describing her as a model of what the Idoma spirit represents.
Members of the Association of Idoma Lawyers lauded Ochanya’s achievement as a source of pride to the Idoma nation and pledged continued support for young scholars through mentorship, career guidance, and academic funding.
According to the group, the initiative is part of a broader effort to promote excellence, integrity, and leadership among Idoma youths, ensuring that the next generation has the capacity to compete globally.
