The long-awaited dream of the Benue South Senatorial District to have its own state may soon become a reality, as the House of Representatives has proposed the creation of 31 new states in Nigeria, with Apa State included on the list.

If the proposal is approved, Nigeria would see its number of states increase to 67, including the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

The Idoma community in Benue South has long advocated for the creation of Apa State, citing perceived marginalization within the larger Benue State.

Since the creation of Benue State by then military head of state, General Murtala Mohammed, no one from Benue South has been elected as governor, a situation that has led to widespread dissatisfaction among the Idoma people.

With this new development, the Idoma community may soon have their own state, fulfilling a long-standing aspiration for political autonomy and better representation.
