Igede will produce Benue South senator in 2035 – Benson Abounu-led group
The Benue South Strategic Group, led by former deputy governor, Benson Abounu, has moved to zone the Benue South senatorial seat to Apa/Agatu and Oju/Obi federal constituencies ahead of the 2035 general elections.
The decision formed part of key resolutions reached at a stakeholders’ meeting of the group, where issues of political marginalisation, equity, and power rotation dominated discussions.
Addressing journalists after the meeting, the group said the move was aimed at correcting long-standing imbalances in the distribution of political offices within the district.
According to the group, historical records show that some federal constituencies have repeatedly produced senators, while others have never had the opportunity since the creation of Benue State.
It noted that Otukpo Federal Constituency has produced notable figures such as former Senate President David Mark, while Ado/Okpokwu/Ogbadibo Federal Constituency has also produced leaders including Senator Abba Moro.
In contrast, the group observed that Apa/Agatu and Oju/Obi federal constituencies have never produced a senator, describing the situation as a clear case of internal marginalisation.
“As a people who have consistently spoken against marginalisation, we cannot afford to replicate the same injustice within our own zone,” the group stated.
It therefore resolved that constituencies which have previously produced senators should step aside in future elections, allowing Apa/Agatu and Oju/Obi to produce the next occupants of the seat, potentially extending into 2035 under a rotational arrangement.
The group further recommended that whichever constituency produces the next senator should support the other to take its turn after completing its tenure.
On which of the two constituencies should go first, the group declined to take a definitive position, urging stakeholders to reach a mutual understanding.
“Our stand is based on fairness and inclusivity. Those who have not benefited should be given the opportunity. A gentleman’s agreement can determine who goes first,” the group added.
The resolution forms part of the broader political strategy of the Benue South Strategic Group as it seeks to promote equity and balanced representation across the district.
