Then, deep into stoppage time, after Nahuel Molina was dismissed for a petulant push on Alex Baene, Moreno added a second goal putting an end to Diego Simeone’s team’s valiant efforts to find an equaliser for a share of the points.
Atletico was upset that they were unable to build on their opening triumph at Getafe, while Villarreal’s perfect La Liga start remains.
On Monday, August 29, Atletico will travel to Valencia in their next match. For Villarreal, the second leg of their Europa Conference League play-off against Hadjuk Split in Croatia awaits them after their 4-2 aggregate lead in the first leg.
