Gas tanker catches fire after speeding over bump in Lagos

A gas-laden tanker caught fire on Thursday after the driver reportedly lost control while speeding over a road bump along Abaranje Road in the Ikotun area of Lagos State.

The incident, which occurred at the Ola Farm Bus Stop, was swiftly contained by emergency responders, with no fatalities or injuries recorded.

The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), through its Permanent Secretary, Olawale Afolabi, confirmed the incident in a statement, noting that officials of the agency collaborated with the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service to extinguish the blaze and prevent it from spreading to nearby buildings, businesses and other road users.

According to Afolabi, personnel of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), and officers of the Nigeria Police Force from the Ikotun Division also participated in traffic management and crowd control throughout the emergency operation.

“We are grateful to report that there was no loss of life, and no casualties were recorded. The situation has been brought under control, and the fire fully extinguished,” he said.

LASEMA added that efforts were ongoing to remove the burnt tanker from the roadway, with heavy-duty recovery equipment deployed for the evacuation.

Afolabi urged motorists to observe speed limits, particularly around speed bumps and in residential areas, stressing that responsible driving is essential to safeguarding lives and property.

He reaffirmed LASEMA’s commitment to disaster preparedness, rapid emergency response and public safety across Lagos State, while commending all emergency agencies and residents for their cooperation during the operation.
