(MUST READ) See the achievements of Peace Corps of Nigeria since inception

Despite the foundational challenges encountered by Peace Corps of Nigeria (PCN), it has recorded remarkable achievements which among others include:

  • “Establishment of a befitting Headquarters in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Abuja and a network of State Command Offices in the 36 States of the Federation and FCT Command;
  • Membership Strength which includes over 113,822 Permanent Staff who has passed through PCN mandatory One Month Initial Training and Orientation in its Staff Officers Cadre and over 78,247 volunteers spread across the Federation;
  • The Introduction of Nigerian Peace Corps (NPC) Bill (a Bill for an Act to establish the Nigerian Peace Corps (NPC) to Empower, Develop, provide Alternative Employment for the Youths, to facilitate Peace, Volunteerism, Community Services, Nation – building and for other related matters, 2015) in the two Chambers of the National Assembly i.e. the Senate and House of Representatives. This all important Bill has scaled through First and Second Readings in both Chambers and over 93 percent of Major Stakeholders and the general public supported the Bill during the Public Hearing at both Chambers;
  • PCN was enlisted by the United Nations Economic and Social Council in 2011 and subsequently granted a Special Consultative Status by UN on 1st August, 2013 after a successful defence of its application for a Consultative Status by a 2-man delegate led by Amb. (DR) Dickson A. O. Akoh during the Annual Session of the Committee on Non-Governmental Organisations held in January, 2013 at the UN Headquarters, USA;
  • The formal recognition accorded PCN and its activities by the Federal Government through the Federal Ministry of Youth Development in 2004, which was renewed in October, 2013.
  • The activities of PCN in Schools and Colleges were registered and accorded recognition by the Federal Ministry of Education under its General Education and Support Services in October, 2002.
  • Affiliated to Nigerian National Commission for UNESCO in March, 2013;
  • Granted approval by the Government of 33 States of the Federation for the establishment of PCN in their Schools and Colleges;
  • Granted approval by the Federal Ministry of Education for the establishment of PCN in all Colleges (Unity Schools) across the States of the Federation.
  • PCN in 2010 introduced and has successfully hosted UN International Day of Peace every 21st September, which has attracted the partnership of Federal Ministries, Agencies, Non- Governmental Organisations and other Civil Society Organisations;
  • The sponsorship and participation of Six (6) Principal Officers of PCN in UN Conference on Green Economy at UN Regional Office in Nairabo, Kenya, in 2012;
  • PCN upon return from the Green Economy Conference in Kenya replicated the Conference by organizing the first ever ………..on Nigeria and Greening the Economy, which served as a platform to adequately prepare Nigerian delegations to the Ex-Summit in Brazil;
  • The sponsorship and participation of Seven (7) Principal Officers of PCN in UN Ex-Summit in Rio De Jeniero, Brazil in 2012. The Ex- Summit, which is held every 20 years, is a Meeting of World Leaders, Heads of UN Mission and Head of organization in Consultative Status with UN;
  • The annual sponsorship of Senior Officers of the organization to UN Conferences and Meetings, including General Assembly since 2013 in New York City, USA;
  • PCN was granted approval by National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) for partnership in Disaster Management Services since 2011;
  • The introduction and registration of Peace Award (Senior Advocate of Peace, International Peace Medal and International Peace Envoy) by PCN, which has been accorded national and international recognition. The Peace Award is given to well- meaning and deserving individuals across the globe annually at a Side Event organized by PCN during UN General Assembly; and
  • The introduction of the Sustainable Development Goals Ambassador’s Award, which has been registered as Peace Corps of Nigeria’s Intellectual Property by the Nigerian Copyright Commission (NCC).
