N400,000 minimum wage: Real reason labour suspended strike
The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and Trade Union Congress (TUC) have suspended their nationwide strike, which began earlier this week.
The decision comes after a meeting between labour leaders and government officials, including Secretary to the Government of the Federation George Akume.
According to TUC chairman Festus Osifo, the government has pledged to implement a new national minimum wage higher than the current N60,000.
This development has raised hopes that the strike, which had crippled economic activities across the country, may be resolved soon.
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration has faced intense pressure to address the demands of workers, who have been seeking a wage increase amid rising inflation and economic hardship.
The strike suspension provides a temporary reprieve, but labour leaders warn that they will resume industrial action if the government fails to honour its promises.
