2027: NDC campaign DG urges Atiku to join Obi-Kwankwaso alliance

The Director-General of the Nigeria Democratic Congress NDC Presidential Campaign Council, Ibrahim Abdulkarim, has urged former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar to join the alliance backing Peter Obi and Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso ahead of the 2027 presidential election.

Abdulkarim said opposition leaders must unite to defeat the ruling All Progressives Congress APC. He made the appeal while speaking on Arise News

According to Abdulkarim, the NDC can provide a platform for opposition unity. He said Obi had emerged as the party’s presidential candidate, while Kwankwaso had agreed to work with him.

“The opposition must come together for us to win. They have already started coming together. Nobody said the coalition must be on the ADC platform. It can happen in the NDC, and Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso has already dropped his ambition,” he said.

He also urged Atiku and other opposition figures to join the alliance. Their participation, he argued, would strengthen its national reach.

“We are asking other leaders, including former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar, to join us. This will help us achieve the wider national reach they believe they can bring,” he added

Meanwhile, Abdulkarim dismissed comparisons between the NDC’s campaign structure and the Obidient movement, which supports Obi.

He argued that a political party should not be compared with a support group. He also said the NDC had more than 1,000 support groups.

“How can you compare a political party with a support group? We have no problem with them because they are all part of the NDC. We have more than 1,000 support groups like that,” he said

Abdulkarim also addressed concerns about electoral fraud ahead of the 2027 elections. He urged Nigerians who fear their votes may not count to support the NDC.

Furthermore, he said the party would campaign peacefully across the country. He added that it had developed a programme to protect voters’ choices.

“We will campaign peacefully and reach every corner of the country. I can assure anyone who wants their vote to count that we have a unique and serious programme in place,” he said.
