Netflix announces plan to stop password sharing

Netflix has announced plan to stop password sharing on the movie streaming platform in a bid to curtail non-authorised subscribers from accessing it.

According to a Netflix spokesperson, a new feature that requires subscribers to confirm ownership or proximity to the holder of the Neflix account at each log in attempt is currently being tested among a small group of randomly selected subscribers.

A code is sent to the account holder which the subscriber is asked to provide.

“This test is designed to help ensure that people using Netflix accounts are authorised to do so,” CBS MoneyWatch quoted a Netflix spokesperson as saying.

“Consumer-friendly ways to address password-sharing and protect members in the process,” the spokesman added.

The platform was designed to allow their top subscribers share accounts with at least two more people so the idea of password sharing has never been an issue.

Netflix CEO Reed Hastings said “password sharing is something you have to learn to live with” as he addressed the issue in 2016.

But the company now say this feature is created to protect their subscribers from unauthorised non-subscribers.

Netflix, an American company, is the leading global movie streaming platform.

It has a lot of subscribers in Nigeria.

Nollywood films Lion Heart, Oloture, Chief Daddy, King of Boys and host of others are streaming on Netflix.
