New Zealand players evacuate hotel after fire
The New Zealand Women’s World Cup squad encountered a harrowing incident as they were forced to evacuate their downtown hotel on Saturday night due to multiple small fires that broke out. Following the alarming situation, New Zealand police apprehended a 34-year-old man on charges of burglary and arson. The suspect is set to appear in Auckland District Court on Monday to face the legal consequences of his actions.
This unfortunate event marked the second security incident within a span of three days during the World Cup. Tragically, the tournament’s first morning witnessed a fatal shooting near team hotels. As the Football Ferns, New Zealand’s national women’s football team, dealt with this disconcerting development, they promptly followed safety protocols and were briefly evacuated from the Pullman Hotel.
Despite the chaos, the New Zealand team ensured that all players were safe and accounted for, providing reassurance amid the unsettling situation. However, four individuals required treatment for smoke inhalation, as reported by the New Zealand Herald newspaper.
