The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has called an emergency National Executive Council (NEC) meeting in response to the police summoning its National President, Joe Ajaero, over allegations of terrorism financing.

The meeting is set for 8 a.m. today, with participation from all affiliate leaders and state chapter representatives.

The meeting was announced in a notice issued by NLC Secretary General Emmanuel Ugboaja, titled “Notice of Emergency National Executive Council Meeting.”

Earlier, it was reported that Ajaero was summoned by the police on charges including “criminal conspiracy, terrorism financing, reasonable felony, subversion, and cybercrime.

” The invitation letter, dated August 19, 2024, and signed by ACP Adamu Mu’azu on behalf of the Commissioner of Police Intelligence, warned that a warrant of arrest would be issued if Ajaero failed to appear at the IRT Complex in Abuja at 10 a.m. today.

In addition, a recent night raid on the NLC national secretariat in Abuja was confirmed by the police, who claimed it was part of an investigation into an international figure considered a threat to Nigeria’s democracy.

The NLC rejected this explanation and condemned the government’s alleged interference in its internal affairs, including a proposed reduction in the tenure of trade union leaders.
