No visa for corrupt Nigerian Govt officials – US declares amid petition against Wike
The United States has issued a stern warning to corrupt Nigerian government officials, saying they could face visa restrictions.
In a statement posted on its official X account on Monday, the US Mission in Nigeria emphasized that the fight against corruption transcends borders and that accountability applies even to high-profile individuals.
“Fighting corruption knows no borders or limits on accountability. Even when high-profile individuals engage in corruption, they can be barred from receiving US visas,” the Mission stated.
DAILY POST reports that the US has, in the past, imposed visa restrictions on Nigerian politicians accused of undermining democratic processes and participating in electoral malpractice.
The warning comes amid growing concerns from transparency advocates over alleged mismanagement of public funds and abuse of office at various levels of government in Nigeria.
Washington stressed that denying entry to corrupt officials is part of a broader effort to encourage good governance, accountability, and respect for the rule of law in partner countries.
The US Mission’s statement reinforces its commitment to supporting Nigeria’s anti-corruption initiatives and ensuring that individuals involved in corrupt practices face international consequences.
