Novak Djokovic was overcome with emotion as he received a hero’s welcome in his hometown, Belgrade, following his victory at the 2023 US Open.

Djokovic returned to Belgrade on Wednesday and was greeted by an enthusiastic crowd of fans, which brought tears to the World No. 1’s eyes.

Thousands of Serbians cheered euphorically, and the Serbian National Basketball Team, celebrated for their runner-up finish at the FIBA World Cup, accompanied Djokovic.

Despite his efforts to regain composure and speak a few words, Djokovic was overwhelmed with tears of joy by the warm reception in Belgrade. Serbian center Nikola Milutinov offered his consolation, after which Djokovic took the microphone to express his gratitude to his fans.

Djokovic’s victory at the US Open, where he defeated Daniil Medvedev in straight sets, marked his fourth US Open title and a record-tying 24th Grand Slam singles title, solidifying his status as one of the greatest tennis players in history. At 36 years old, he became the oldest men’s champion in New York in the Open era, matching Margaret Court’s all-time record for the most Grand Slam victories.
