Okey Bakassi crowned traditional ruler in Imo

Veteran Nollywood actor and comedian, Okechukwu Anthony Onyegbule, popularly known as Okey Bakassi, has been crowned the traditional ruler of Umuihuocha Obohia Autonomous Community in the Ahiazu Mbaise Local Government Area of Imo State.
The 55-year-old entertainer made the announcement on his Instagram page, where he expressed gratitude to his community, calling the moment “a new beginning.”
According to The Guardian, Bakassi now officially bears the royal title His Royal Highness, Eze Okechukwu Onyegbule, OKWE II of Umuihuocha Obohia, making him the second monarch to carry the prestigious OKWE title in the community’s history.
Umuihuocha Obohia, located in the culturally vibrant Mbaise region, is a respected autonomous community known for its strong cultural heritage and unity.
The coronation marks a significant new chapter in Okey Bakassi’s life, one that extends beyond his successful entertainment career spanning over two decades.
It remains to be seen how his new traditional responsibilities will affect his role as a vocal social commentator. Bakassi has recently been critical of political developments in Nigeria, including his condemnation of President Bola Tinubu’s declaration of a state of emergency in Rivers State.
He wrote: “Politicians are now behaving like they are gods. All of them are now behaving like they are untouchable. If you speak [against them], they will arrest you. This is how they will continue in this recklessness until the military decides to take over the government. That time, they will ask civilians to protest and defend democracy. But now, they don’t want civilians to say anything about democracy.”
