Former Governor of Benue State, Chief Samuel Ortom, has called for unity and urgent national action to end the escalating violence in rural communities, particularly the recent massacre in Yelewata, Guma Local Government Area.
During his visit to the grieving community, Ortom condemned the attack that claimed the lives of over 200 residents, allegedly perpetrated by suspected armed herders.
“Our hearts are heavy with grief for the lives lost and the families devastated by this heinous act. We must stand together as a people and as a nation to ensure such barbaric acts are brought to an end,” Ortom told the mourning crowd.
A high-powered delegation, including Rt accompanied the former governor. Hon. Dickson Tarkighir, Member representing Makurdi/Guma Federal Constituency; Rt. Hon. Ezekiel Adaji, Chairman of the PDP in Benue; former aides; and community leaders.
Describing the attack as “unprovoked and unfortunate,” Ortom urged both federal and state authorities to ramp up efforts in safeguarding vulnerable communities and ensuring that perpetrators face justice. He emphasized the role of intelligence gathering and community policing as crucial tools in preventing further atrocities.
Ortom also acknowledged President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his recent visit to the state and for directing security agencies to apprehend those behind the killings. He thanked Senator George Akume, Secretary to the Government of the Federation, for his own visit, reaffirming readiness to collaborate in ensuring that presidential promises to the people of Yelewata are fulfilled.
To support the affected community, Ortom donated 200 bags of rice and provided financial assistance to grieving families.
