Over 20 killed in fresh attacks on Benue communities

At least 20 people, including a two-year-old child, have been killed in a wave of fresh attacks in Aondana and surrounding communities in Gwer West Local Government Area of Benue State.

The Chairman of the council, Hon. Ormin Torsar Victor, confirmed the killings in an emotional video, expressing deep frustration over the continued bloodshed and the perceived silence of the federal government.

Torsar revealed that the attacks affected several villages, including Tewa Biana, located near a military base. Despite the close proximity to security forces, he lamented that no intervention came during the violent incidents.

“They say the local security doesn’t have the mandate to engage these people—that only the federal government can give that mandate. So should my people continue to die while we wait? What is the meaning of this?” he said tearfully.

The chairman recounted the loss of entire families in the attacks, including the burial of a father and his two sons in Tewa Biana, which occurred just a day prior to his outcry.

“Very close to a military base. What is the meaning of this? If they cannot help me, maybe I’ll leave this position as chairman and let it continue the way it is,” he added, visibly overwhelmed.

He further described the psychological toll the killings have taken on him, stating:

“I don’t care about being chairman anymore. Look at a child of two years old butchered—this is too much for me to condone.”

According to Torsar, the scale of the attacks is devastating, especially as they targeted historically significant villages.

“This is the village of the former First Lady of the state, Mrs. Eunice Ortom. This is the village of the Tugwe. This is the village of Bishop Banagbe. Whatever will happen, will happen. I don’t know what to do anymore,” he added.

As of the time of filing this report, there has been no official statement from security agencies regarding the attacks, fueling further concerns over the safety of rural communities in Benue State.
