Peter Obi did well as governor — Anambra govt admits amid financial dispute

The Anambra State Government has acknowledged the performance of former Governor Peter Obi, despite its ongoing dispute with him over financial records from his administration.

The Commissioner for Information and Value Reorientation, Law Mefor, made the disclosure on Thursday during an interview on the 90MinutesAfrica podcast hosted by Rudolf Okonkwo.

Mefor said the state government’s scrutiny of Obi’s financial records was not intended to undermine his achievements or presidential ambition.

He said the disagreement centred on Obi’s claim that he left no financial liabilities for subsequent administrations, adding that the government was seeking to clarify the state’s financial records.

“The intention of the Anambra State government is not to indict Peter Obi. Peter Obi did well as governor,” Mefor said.

The commissioner, however, questioned Obi’s claim that his administration left N12.13 billion in an ecological fund account with First Bank’s Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka branch.

He said the state government requested the relevant account statement from the bank but found no evidence of the claimed balance.

Mefor also dismissed suggestions of a rift between Governor Chukwuma Soludo and Obi, saying both men were politicians with interests to defend.

“There is no rift between Governor Soludo and Peter Obi. They are both in politics, and they have their interests to defend,” he said.
