The 2023 Labour Party (LP) presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has spoken out in response to US President Donald Trump’s threat of military intervention in Nigeria over alleged Christian persecution.

In a post on X, Obi urged the US to explore diplomatic avenues rather than military action. He highlighted the longstanding positive relationship between Nigeria and America, stressing the need for dialogue and cooperation.

Obi wrote:”The recent designation of Nigeria as a ‘Country of Particular Concern’ (CPC) by the US government, along with indications of possible military intervention, is deeply concerning for every well-meaning Nigerian.

There is no denying that Nigeria faces unprecedented insecurity, with widespread loss of lives and property. According to Amnesty International, over 10,000 people have been killed since May 2023. The senseless killing of Nigerians is deplorable, and all efforts must be made to halt this violence. Significantly, much of this tragedy could be mitigated through competent leadership and governance.

“While insecurity did not begin with the current administration, what is most regrettable is the apparent lack of competence, commitment, and patriotism among the APC-led government to effectively lead Nigeria towards peace, justice, and security for all.

“As democracies, Nigeria and the US have long been strategic partners, united in promoting regional stability and security. That relationship should remain strong. The present challenges call for constructive diplomatic engagement and collaborative measures to address Nigeria’s security concerns swiftly and effectively.”
