Super Eagles star Taiwo Awoniyi has set a new record after joining English Premier League side Nottingham Forest from German Bundesliga side Union Berlin. The Nigerian striker became Nottingham Forest record signing with a fee of £17.2 million.

Awoniyi previously played for Liverpool but could not feature in the league due to work permit and was loaned out on different ocassions before joining Union Berlin.

The Nigerian striker will have a chance to prove himself in the Premier League just like Emmanuel Dennis, Kelechi Iheanacho and other Nigerian internationals in the league.

Nottingham Forest released an official statement on their website to confirm the signing of Taiwo Awoniyi.

“Nottingham Forest are delighted to confirm the signing of Nigerian international forward Taiwo Awoniyi for a club record fee. The 24-year-old joins The Reds from Bundesliga club Union Berlin, signing a five-year-deal at The City Ground,” the club confirmed.

“Awoniyi becomes Forest’s first international signing since last month’s promotion to the Premier League and he joins following an excellent season in Germany, scoring 20 goals in 43 games across all competitions. His 15 goals in 31 Bundesliga matches also helped Union Berlin secure a fifth-place finish and qualification for the UEFA Europa League for the first time since 2001-02.”

Here is what Taiwo Awoniyi said after joining the English Premier League side on a record fee.

“I’m very excited to be here at Nottingham Forest,” said Awoniyi following his move to The City Ground.

“It’s always been my dream to play in the Premier League and having spoken to Steve Cooper about our ambitions and looking at Forest, with its great history, it’s a club that I want to be part of.”
