Suspected members of the Neo-Black Movement, also known as the Aye cult, on Friday evening unleashed violence in Ogidi community, Idemili North Local Government Area of Anambra State.

It was gathered that the armed group invaded the area, injuring several residents and killing the President General of the community, Chief Ikwuka Okoye, along with another yet-to-be-identified person.

The deadly attack is believed to be in retaliation for the killing of a known Aye cult member, Emma Amasco, aged 25.

Amasco, said to be a cultist and minor robber, was reportedly active in Onitsha on Monday and Tuesday, dispossessing victims of their phones and other valuables. On Wednesday, he allegedly attempted to sell about 18 stolen phones and laptops at the Sir Emeka Offor Plaza in Onitsha, where he was arrested.

He was later returned to Ogidi at the request of the community’s traditional ruler and the late President General, both of whom were said to be leading efforts to rid the town of cultism and violent crime

During interrogation, Amasco reportedly confessed to involvement in numerous killings since joining cult activities and mentioned some prominent community members allegedly linked to the crimes.

However, he later died under unclear circumstances, prompting members of the cult to threaten reprisal attacks on the community.

Chief Okoye, described by residents as a respected and influential leader, was shot dead on Friday evening.

As of the time of filing this report, details surrounding the circumstances of his killing remained sketchy.

Confirming the incident, the Anambra State Police Command said it had launched an investigation and vowed to apprehend those responsible.

In a statement issued by the Police Public Relations Officer, Tochukwu Ikenga, the command sympathised with the community and acknowledged a connection between the murder of the President General and the recent arrest and death of the suspected cultist.

The statement read: “Following the report, police operatives swiftly took over the scene of the incident and commenced investigations. The Command is currently working with eyewitness accounts and other available intelligence to identify and arrest the perpetrators.

“The Anambra State Police Command assures members of the public that all efforts are being intensified to bring those responsible to justice. Residents are urged to remain calm and cooperate with the police as investigations continue.”
