Tobi Amusan set for season opener at Queen’s/Grace Jackson Meet in Jamaica

World record holder in the Women’s 100m hurdles, Tobi Amusan, is set to kick off her 2025 season at the Queen’s/Grace Jackson Meet in Kingston, Jamaica, on Saturday, where she will compete in the 60m event.

Amusan will race against Jamaica’s own Grace Jackson, marking their first-ever head-to-head in the same event. This will be Amusan’s first race since the 2024 Paris Olympics, and also Jackson’s first since pulling out of the Games last year.

The 27-year-old hurdler, who switched coaches in September 2024 to join Usain Bolt’s coach Glen Mills in Jamaica, will be eager to make a strong start after a disappointing end to her previous season.

While the event is an exciting opportunity for both athletes, it is not World Athletics certified, so it will not count for qualification toward the 2025 World Championships in Tokyo (September 13-21).

Also racing in the women’s 60m at the meet are former world junior champion Anthonique Strachan and Jonielle Smith. Other notable competitors include Zharnel Hughes, Tyquendo Tracy, and Brendon Rodney.

Amusan holds the world record in the 100m hurdles with a time of 12.12s, set during the 2022 World Championships semi-final in Oregon. She went on to win the world title, making history as Nigeria’s first-ever world athletics champion.

In addition to her world record, Amusan is a three-time Olympic competitor, a four-time African Games champion, five-time African champion, three-time Diamond League winner (2021, 2022, 2023), and two-time Commonwealth Games champion (2018, 2022). She was recently inducted into the University of Texas El Paso’s Hall of Fame.
