Tricycle kills masquerade in Anambra

A tragic incident struck Awka, the Anambra State capital, on Sunday as a young boy dressed in masquerade attire was fatally crushed by a tricycle, resulting in his instant death.

The heartbreaking event occurred during early celebrations and processions ahead of the Imo Awka Festival—an annual cultural event held every May in honour of the town’s deity, symbolised by a monkey.

Eyewitnesses said the boy, fully clad in masquerade regalia, was part of a group of youths parading through the streets to create awareness for the upcoming festival. These pre-festival activities typically involve masquerading, mock cane duels, and occasional roadblocks set up to receive tips from passing motorists.

Mr. Iyke Orji, an eyewitness, described the moment to DAILY POST: “This afternoon in Awka, Imo, Awka masquerades were all over. A Keke NAPEP hit one small boy in costume and his head was crushed. It was truly a sorrowful day.”

Local authorities reportedly apprehended the tricycle driver at the scene.

While the Imo Awka Festival is known for its rich cultural heritage and widespread participation, it has also faced criticism over recurring incidents of violence and fatalities. These concerns have fueled debates about the need for enhanced safety measures and potential reforms to some of its practices.

The 2025 edition of the festival is officially slated to run from May 19 to May 24.
