Truck driver allegedly kills revenue collector, flees scene
The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) has confirmed the death of a revenue collector who was fatally struck by an articulated vehicle while attempting to collect dues from its driver.
In a statement issued on Sunday, the agency’s General Manager, Olalekan Bakare-Oki, disclosed that the incident occurred along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, near New Garage, inbound Lagos.
According to Bakare-Oki, the driver of the vehicle, identified with registration number FST 887 XD, fled the scene after the accident. He explained that the revenue collector was crossing the expressway when the tragic event occurred, succumbing to severe injuries from the impact.
“LASTMA personnel swiftly responded to the scene, managing the situation and mitigating traffic disruption caused by the incident. The remains of the deceased were respectfully handed over to officers of the Adigboluje Police Division, who are working with the victim’s family to ensure proper arrangements,” Bakare-Oki said.
He further noted that the articulated vehicle, which contributed to significant traffic congestion, was removed by LASTMA officers and handed over to the police for further investigation.
The General Manager expressed his condolences to the bereaved family and called on transport unions to prioritize the safety of their members by educating them on secure methods of collecting dues, especially in high-risk areas such as expressways.
