Two police officers were shot dead in an attack on the convoy of Dr. Chimezie Ukaegbu, the Commissioner for Trade, Commerce, and Investment in Abia State. The assailants also set ablaze a vehicle belonging to the ministry during the attack.

The incident occurred at around 4 p.m. on Tuesday when the commissioner’s convoy was on a familiarization tour to markets in Aba. Gunmen ambushed the convoy as it was en route to Ekeoha Shopping Plaza, unleashing a hail of bullets on the security detail.

According to ASP Maureen Chinaka, the Abia State Police Public Relations Officer, an Inspector and a Constable were among the victims who lost their lives in the line of duty. Tragically, a police Constable, who was part of the security convoy, was fatally shot, while a police Inspector, who was not initially part of the convoy but on a separate assignment with a police Hilux, also lost his life in the attack.

In addition to the loss of lives, the hoodlums carried out acts of destruction by setting a vehicle belonging to the Ministry for Trade, Commerce, and Investment on fire.

Abia State Commissioner of Police, Kenechukwu Onwuemelie, has vowed to conduct a thorough investigation into the attack and ensure that the perpetrators are apprehended and brought to justice. In the wake of the incident, authorities have urged the residents of Abia State to remain calm, vigilant, and cooperate fully with the security agencies as they work to restore peace and bring the culprits to justice.
