The United States Embassy in Nigeria has announced a temporary suspension of routine updates on its social media platforms, citing the ongoing government shutdown in Washington caused by a budget impasse.

In a post on X (formerly Twitter) on Wednesday, the Embassy stated:

“Due to the lapse in appropriations, this account will not be updated regularly until full operations resume, except for urgent safety and security information.”

The Embassy clarified that critical consular services, including passport issuance and visa processing, will continue both in the US and at embassies and consulates abroad, “as the situation permits.”

It added: “At this time, scheduled passport and visa transit services in the United States and at U.S. Embassies and Consulates overseas will continue during the lapse in appropriations as the situation permits.

We will not update this account until full operations resume, except for urgent safety and security information. For information on our services and operating status, visit [http://travel.state.gov.”](http://travel.state.gov.”)

The announcement comes as the US government entered a shutdown on Wednesday after lawmakers failed to reach a budget agreement. The deadlock, linked to Democratic demands for increased healthcare funding, has forced the suspension of several federal operations.
