War in Idoma history

Encyclopedia Britannica described the Idoma people as “warrior” “hunters” who are peace loving.

The Alekwu chant speaks of a great Idoma war hero who appeared at Ida amidst blasts of Okakachi to be conferred with great honor by Attah-Idah after a great victory in an unknown battle. Other lost Idoma war heroes include Edeh: immortalized in folklores.

Warfare is Idoma culture is very organized with a leader: Ogbobefu. Weapons included oboh (spear) owi ml’ ota(arrow and bow) okpachangeli (sword) and eka.

Enemies may face themselves and shoot. Engaged in mutual combats or a guerrilla attack may be launched at night with silent slaughter and burning down of huts.

The last efu onya was fought in a guerrilla fashion with surprised attack from Forrest on mounted Abakpas and quick disappearance into the jungle.

When the whites came in 1922. Various Idoma Ajeh were in conflict with themselves, the Tivs and Igedes.

The Ishahoho, Oglinye and Odumu dances are pure war dances that remind us of our past

But our greatest battles on horseback with the Hausa city states and Kauris are forever lost to history.
