‘We want jobs, not Alia bread’ — Activist Ejembi tackles Sam Ode
A Benue-based activist, Comrade Daniel Okpe Ejembi, has criticised Deputy Governor Sam Ode over his recent defence of distributing bread and other items during a visit to Benue South, saying the people of the state are demanding jobs and good governance rather than handouts.
In an open letter titled “Bread Instead of Governance,” Ejembi described the deputy governor’s remarks as an insult to the intelligence and dignity of the people of Benue, particularly those in Zone C.
According to him, residents are more concerned about insecurity, unemployment, poor infrastructure and the collapse of industries than receiving bread.
“We are not children waiting at the gate for bread when our parents return from travel. We are citizens of a state bleeding from insecurity, hunger and unemployment,” he stated.
The activist said the people of Benue want a government that protects lives and property, revives moribund industries, creates employment opportunities and delivers quality healthcare, education and infrastructure.
He argued that distributing bread and cash while communities continue to suffer attacks, hunger and economic hardship does not address the state’s pressing challenges.
Ejembi also questioned the timing of the state government’s recent asset audit of the Igumale Cement Factory and Benue Burnt Bricks, alleging that the exercise was politically motivated ahead of the 2027 general elections.
According to him, the facilities had remained neglected for much of the administration’s tenure before attracting renewed attention as political activities gather momentum.
He urged youths in Benue South not to be swayed by temporary handouts but to assess political leaders based on their performance in governance, security and economic development.
“The people of Benue deserve leadership, security and jobs—not bread,” he said.
His comments come amid growing political debate in Benue State over governance, development and preparations for the 2027 elections.
