At least 107 bodies have been recovered following a horrific early morning assault on Yelewata community in Guma Local Government Area of Benue State by suspected armed herdsmen.
The deadly attack, which occurred in the early hours of Saturday, plunged the quiet settlement into chaos and mourning, leaving scores of residents dead and many others severely injured.
By Saturday afternoon, local sources confirmed that over 100 corpses had been retrieved from the ruins. The victims include women, children, the elderly, and even security personnel. Eyewitnesses described the aftermath as a scene from hell, with several bodies burnt beyond recognition.
Residents could be seen rummaging through the debris in frantic search for missing loved ones, while the stench of charred human flesh lingered in the air.
One distraught local, Gberindyer Vanen, took to social media with a chilling message:
“I just drove past Yelewata now. Human beings are still burning inside their homes. You can perceive the smell of roasted human flesh.”
Another community elder, Zege Orkwande, also shared an update, writing:
“So far, 107 bodies found while the search is still in progress. Pray for Yelewata, pray for Benue State. Our leaders’ failures in insecurity is obvious.”
The Benue State Police Command confirmed the attack but has yet to provide an official casualty figure.
As of the time of this report, the Benue State Government has not issued a formal statement regarding the tragedy.
Meanwhile, House of Representatives hopeful for Makurdi/Guma Federal Constituency, Engr. Thaddeus Orkpe, expressed deep sorrow over the incident.
“I am deeply saddened by the senseless and brutal attack that claimed the lives of innocent citizens in Yelewata,” he said.
“My thoughts and prayers are with the grieving families and the entire community during this time of immense sorrow. This act of violence is not only condemnable but a tragic reminder of the urgent need to strengthen security and ensure justice for all.”
