2023 WWC: Morocco beat Colombia, advance to round of 16

The Atlas Lionesses of Morocco roared their way into the Round of 16, securing a memorable victory against Colombia with a scoreline of 1-0 in the ongoing Women’s World Cup on Thursday.

Despite being the newcomers to the tournament, the North African team showcased their skills and determination, finishing second in Group H with an impressive six points, the same as Colombia.

With this victory, Morocco now joins the ranks of Nigeria’s Super Falcons and Banyana Banyana of South Africa in the knockout stage, making their mark on the global stage.

However, the real shock of the group came from the two-time women’s World Cup champions, Germany. Their dreams of a third title were shattered when they were held to a 1-1 draw by South Korea, resulting in their unexpected exit from the tournament at the group stage for the first time in history.

For Morocco, the key moment in their qualification came in their final group game against Colombia. After previously securing a narrow 1-0 victory against South Korea, they replicated the same scoreline against Colombia, thanks to the heroics of Anissa Lahmari.

In a tense match, Lahmari seized the opportunity and netted the decisive goal after Ghizlane Chebbak’s initial penalty was saved by the Colombian goalkeeper.

Now, the Atlas Lionesses are gearing up for an even greater challenge in the Round of 16 as they are set to face off against France on Tuesday, August 8.
