Angry youths burn down police station in Benue over killing of okada rider
The Benue State police command has explained what led to the death of a motorcyclist along Aliade-Awajir, Monday afternoon.
DAILY POST reports that the victim was killed for interfering while the officer was allegedly struggling with a fellow Okada rider over N50 in Achohol community.
Speaking with DAILY POST on phone Tuesday evening, the Benue State Police PRO, ASP Moses Yamu said the incident was not intentional.
According to him, the victim was not directly targeted by the officer, saying that it was an accidental discharge.
Speaking on the genesis of the crisis, Yamu hinted our reporter that some police officers attached to Awajir police station were on patrol in the area on the market day when they stumbled into some persons creating crisis.
According to him, “When the officers arrived the scene, they wanted to settle the case; one Ukum Aume grabbed the gun of one of our men, trying to disarm him and he mistakenly fired a shot and stray bullets hit one okada rider who was not close to the scene of the incident.”

He identified the deceased as Gabriel Saa.
Speaking further, the police spokesman said the youths of the community went berserk and set the Awajir police station ablaze. He added that one of the protesting youths grabbed the gun of a sergeant and fled.
Yamu said the Deputy Commissioner of Police, Benue State Command led some officers to the area on Tuesday to calm the situation.
He said the team met with the District Head of Kendev, Zaki Kough Agber who recovered the gun from the youths.
While describing the incident as very unfortunate, the police PPRO enjoined youths in the state to always corporate with the police in the midst of crisis.
He added that normalcy had since been resorted to the area.
