Sweden emerged triumphant with a 2-0 victory over co-hosts Australia in the third-place playoffs of the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup on Saturday.

This marks Sweden’s second consecutive bronze win, as they also claimed the same honor during the 2019 edition in France. With this win, Sweden has now captured the bronze medal on four occasions, achieving this feat in 1991, 2011, 2019, and 2023.

Australia’s performance in this year’s World Cup has been their most impressive to date, reaching the semi-finals for the first time.

During Saturday’s match, Fridolina Rolfo secured the lead for Sweden in the 30th minute through a penalty kick. Asllani then extended their advantage in the 62nd minute, skillfully volleying a well-placed pass into the net from within the box.

Meanwhile, the final match of the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup will feature European champions England and Spain. This marks the first time that both of these teams have qualified for the tournament’s final stage.
