The police in Benue State have initiated a decisive effort to curb the proliferation of illegal levies commonly referred to as ‘marching ground’ activities in the region.

This crackdown was revealed during a meeting on Thursday between the police and the MINDA APC Youth Forum. The meeting, held at the Area Command office, involved the participation of the new Commissioner of Police and the MOPOL commandant for Benue State.

Representatives from various police divisions, including A Division, B Division, C Division, D Division, and E Division, as well as DPOs from Daudu, Naka, Aliade, and Gbajimba, were present at the meeting.

In a proactive move, the police commissioner directed all DPOs to take immediate action to apprehend and prosecute those involved in such criminal activities as ‘marching ground’ and other illicit levies. These actions are intended to restore law and order and to deter further criminal behavior.

The newly appointed commissioner conveyed his deep commitment to fostering peace within the state. He emphasized the importance of cooperation with local communities, particularly the youth, for achieving sustainable development. Recognizing the negative impact of acrimony and insecurity on progress, the commissioner highlighted the need for unity and collaboration to achieve success.

Describing ‘marching ground’ activities as criminal and unlawful, the commissioner stressed the importance of completely eradicating such practices. This, he asserted, would foster a conducive environment for investment and business growth.

The commissioner urged individuals, including land developers, shop owners, and businesspeople, to promptly report any demands for money related to ‘marching ground’ activities to the nearest police stations. Furthermore, he encouraged citizens to report any DPO or police officer who fails to apprehend individuals involved in these unlawful activities.

The motto “If you see something, say something” was echoed, reinforcing the idea of public involvement in maintaining security. The police underscored their role as allies and partners in safeguarding the community and solicited support in the efforts to realize Governor Hyacinth Iormem Alia’s vision for the growth and development of Benue State.

The statement concluded with expressions of solidarity for Benue State, Governor Alia, the Nigeria Police, and the MINDA youth.
