AFCON 2023: Angola in fresh trouble ahead of clash with Nigeria

Angola’s bid to have goalkeeper Adilson Cipriano da Cruz, known as ‘Neblú,’ cleared for the crucial quarter-final clash with Nigeria has been unsuccessful. Neblú was red-carded during the Palancas Negras’ 3-0 victory against Namibia in the Round of 16 for handling the ball inside the box.

Initially facing a two-game suspension, an appeal by the Angola Football Federation resulted in a reduction to a one-game ban. Despite the appeal, Neblú’s absence will be a significant setback for Pedro Goncalves’ side as they aim for a historic semi-final berth in the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

The quarter-final showdown against the Super Eagles is scheduled to take place at the Felix Houphouet Boigny Stadium in Abidjan on Friday. Angola will have to navigate this crucial encounter without their experienced shot-stopper, adding an extra layer of challenge to their quest for AFCON glory.
