In January 2014, he earned a spot in the Nigeria 23-man team for the 2014 African Nations Championship in South Africa under coach Stephen Keshi. He played a crucial role in helping the team secure a third-place finish by defeating Zimbabwe with a goal to nil.

Known for his versatility, Essieme displayed his skills in various positions throughout his career. He notably filled in as a left-back against Mozambique in the absence of the injured Benjamin Francis and excelled as a holding midfielder in the team’s final match against South Africa.

Throughout his career, Essieme played for renowned Nigeria Premier Football League sides such as Enyimba FC, Niger Tornadoes, Warri Wolves, Enugu Rangers, and ABS FC.
