Police arrest woman for allegedly poisoning husband 40 days after marriage in Bauchi

A 19-year-old woman, Aisha Musa, is in police custody in Bauchi State after she was accused of attempting to poison her husband less than two months into their marriage.

The incident reportedly occurred in Gwamma village, located in Bauchi Local Government Area, and was made public by the Bauchi State Police Command on Thursday.

According to information released by the command, the couple had been married for only about 40 days before the alleged incident took place.

Police authorities alleged that the suspect secretly introduced a poisonous substance into a meal prepared for her husband on August 12.

The victim was said to have developed complications and was rushed to the Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University Teaching Hospital (ATBUTH), Bauchi, where he is currently receiving treatment. Authorities said his condition has been stabilised.

Investigators disclosed that the case came to light after an anonymous woman alerted the police through a distress call. Officers were subsequently deployed to the area, leading to the suspect’s arrest.

During the course of the investigation, the police said the suspect admitted to the allegation while being questioned.

“Suspect confessed. SCID investigating,” the command stated in a post on its official X account.

Items recovered from the scene included leftover food believed to have been contaminated and an empty container suspected to have held the substance allegedly used in the act. The exhibits have been taken into police custody for further examination.

The Bauchi State Police Command, through its spokesperson, SP Nafiu Habib, said detectives from the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) are continuing investigations into the matter.
