Attah AaronStudents at the University of Benin are staging a protest over a power outage that has lasted for more than three weeks.
The outage occurred after the university failed to reach an agreement with the Benin Electricity Distribution Company over disputed electricity billing.
The university’s management expressed dismay at the increase in the monthly electricity bill from N80 million to N280 million.
Unable to endure the resulting hardship, the students decided to protest on Wednesday morning. They carried placards and chanted slogans as they blocked the Lagos-Benin Expressway, forcing all vehicles to use only the inbound route.
The school’s main gate remains completely shut down as the demonstration continues.
