Dangote Refinery delivers first batch of locally produced petrol

The Dangote Refinery has officially released its first supply of locally produced Premium Motor Spirit (PMS), marking a significant milestone in Nigeria’s energy sector. The 650,000 barrels-per-day refinery, situated in Lagos, is now operational, with its initial batch of petrol set to reach the market soon.

Aliko Dangote, Chairman of the Dangote Group, made the announcement during a media briefing on Tuesday. He highlighted the refinery’s role in reducing Nigeria’s dependence on imported fuel, curbing inflation, and stabilizing the exchange rate.

“This refinery will provide a high-quality product that meets international standards,” Dangote stated. “We are proud to reach this stage and are grateful to everyone who supported us, including the President and our partners. Our next step is to finalize our agreements with the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited, after which our petrol will be available to consumers.”

The $20 billion facility, which began operations in January 2024, had previously launched the production of Naphtha and Aviation Fuel. The rollout of petrol comes at a critical time, as the country faces widespread fuel shortages and soaring prices, with some regions reporting prices above N1,000 per liter.
