BREAKING: Police withdraw security from Lagos Assembly Speaker, Meranda

All security personnel assigned to Speaker Mojisola Meranda of the Lagos State House of Assembly have been withdrawn.

IDOMA VOICE reports that as of Thursday morning, all security details—including police officers—attached to the Speaker have been pulled out.

While it remains unclear who authorized the removal, a source close to Meranda confirmed that the Speaker now finds herself exposed. “All security aides assigned to the Speaker, as well as those protecting the entire House of Assembly, have been withdrawn,” the source said, noting that this leaves her particularly vulnerable.

This development comes amid reports that Meranda may soon resign from her position as Speaker. The move follows intervention by prominent All Progressives Congress figures, including former governors Chief Bisi Akande of Osun State and Aremo Olusegun Osoba of Ogun State.

A mediation panel, led by these heavyweights, convened last Sunday with key stakeholders at the House—including members of the Governance Advisory Council at the Governor’s Lodge in Marina. According to GAC members present, the panel recommended that Mudashiru Obasa resign and suggested that Meranda should also step down, paving the way for a new lawmaker from Lagos West to assume the leadership mantle.

Meranda’s spokesperson, Ganzallo Victor, confirmed the security withdrawal to The PUNCH, saying, “We don’t know why the authorities have done that, but all the police officers and other security details attached to her have been withdrawn. She’s on her own at the moment.” Meanwhile, another source from Obasa’s camp stated that all of his security aides have been fully reinstated as of this morning.
