Tension at Rivers Assembly as security locks out Governor Fubara

A dramatic scene unfolded at the Rivers State House of Assembly Complex on Wednesday when Governor Siminalayi Fubara arrived, only to find the entrance gate locked.

Eyewitnesses observed that security personnel at the complex shut the gates as the governor’s convoy approached, citing a lack of official communication between the governor and the Assembly.

However, Governor Fubara insisted he had notified Speaker Martins Amaewhule through a letter and had attempted to reach him by phone since Tuesday.

The incident comes amid Fubara’s recent directive for the full implementation of the Supreme Court’s February 28, 2025, judgment and his order to the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC) to prepare for fresh local government elections scheduled for August 9, 2025.

Additionally, the Secretary to the State Government, Tammy Danagogo, had written to the lawmakers on March 7, 2025, requesting a meeting on March 10, 2025, to discuss the re-presentation of the 2025 budget and peace talks. However, the Assembly responded that the invitation must follow the proper channels.
