Gov Alia places Benue on red alert over rising insecurity
Governor Hyacinth Alia of Benue State has instructed security agencies and residents to remain on high alert in response to growing security concerns in the region.
Over recent weeks, the state has seen a significant increase in insecurity, particularly in the Otukpo, Kwande, and Sankera areas, which include the Logo, Ukum, and Katsina-Ala Local Government Areas (LGAs).
Nearly 30 people have lost their lives in a series of attacks by herders in Otukpo, while Sankera has seen almost 60 fatalities. In Kwande LGA, reports indicate at least five deaths daily, with several communities overtaken and renamed by armed herdsmen. These attacks have also displaced many residents, forcing them into Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) camps for safety.
In light of the rising tensions, Governor Alia issued a statement through his Chief Press Secretary, Tersoo Kula, urging heightened vigilance across the state.
The statement, titled “Benue on Alert,” read in part: “Governor Hyacinth Alia has directed all security agencies in the state to be vigilant, and has called on residents, particularly those in affected areas, to remain alert and promptly report any suspicious activity to the authorities.
“This is an important advisory and must be taken seriously.”
